Proud Moments...
"Razzberries!" was the response Jenna gave Nate recently when told she needed to do something. "Soy Sauce!" is a call I hear from both kids when we have Chinese food and pull the soy sauce from the fridge. "I'm a Jazz Baby" is what I heard Jenna singing in the tub the other day.
Do these phrases sound familiar? Well, I have been trying to keep the kids fans of the older musicals and these quotes are from:

Jenna's Birthday
Okay, in one last catch up blog I thought I should put up some photos of the birthday girl. We had a crazy week and in order to have a dinner with all the family we had to have it early. It ended up that we had three days of parties/birthday stuff for her- she had a REALLY good week!

Jenna got to pick out the meal. When I asked her what she wanted her response was "...well, we have to have strawberries..." Think she has enough on her waffles. She skipped over the cut ones and put huge whole ones on instead.
Notice the requisite chocolate cake with even more strawberries- this girl could eat a package of strawberries every day!
That night she got to eat more cake and the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Dinner. The theme this year was Chinese New Year. Every year they have a scout and father (or other adult) cake decorating contest. This year Spencer and Nate made a Chinese Checkers cake. It was a big hit and I will have to get the photos off Nate's camera to show later. So while Jenna didn't get her own celebration for her birthday she got to taste at least 2 different cakes for dessert.

The Cake
The Birthday
The day of the birthday she was able to open the traditional gift on the bed. (My mom would leave us a present on our bed on our birthday that we could open as soon as we woke up and we didn't have to wait for anyone else.) Jenna is still learning that she doesn't have to bring it out of her room to open - but Spencer has it all figured out. She also got to open gifts from Gma and Gpa Ashford.Normally I take a photo of her on her birthday but I must have forgotten.

The Friend Party

We switched up our usual routine and had a birthday party somewhere other than our house. Jenna is our crafty girl so we went to Michael's for her party. The girls had a fun time decorating jewelry boxes and making bracelets.
Even Grokkie and Jill had a good time making bracelets!

We had a fun week and Jenna was very cheerful telling everyone about her 3 birthdays that she was having- all in one week too! Funny how she only gained 1 year in age though. It being a leap year - I think she had a couple of people wondering if she was a leap year baby but no.

Imagination Fair
Spencer's school does an Imagination Fair every year rather than a science fair. They can do whatever they want- Science Experiments, models, display a collection, etc.
Spencer wanted to build a bridge and he paired up with his friend Ryan to build a replica of what the new I-35 bridge is supposed to look like. They found a photo of the design online and started building with the help of Ryan's dad (the main building site was at his house.)
Here is a picture of the two at the Fair with their poster and bridge.

She has finally lost that first tooth!
Yikes, I wonder if that means we need to start saving up for braces.
To give credit where credit is due I need to mention that Nate was the one to actually pull it out for her but it was overdue to come out.
Jenna just gets so nervous about the unknown- hopefully now that she has experienced this the next loose tooth will not take her so long to get out.
And the required close up of the new hole smile!
And yes, that white that shows in the hole, is her new tooth.

Spencer's Writer's Block Cure- extra helpers
Sometimes it is very helpful to have family so nearby. When homework gets tough it can be nice for a different adult to help out- to give a new outlook or ideas.
Spencer is really good about doing his homework but sometimes writing a story or poem can be really challenging for him. Recently, when the help that Nate and I were giving apparently wasn't what he needed he got some extra help from Grandma.
Here are the two poems that he wrote.

On another day my sister, Jill was over and helped him get over the writer's block for writing down a memory. It is nice to others so close and willing to step in and help. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

A friend for Kali?
I am way behind in sharing some of our recent photos so I will start with my sister's new puppy. We let Jenna join us for the long car ride to get Bruno. She was pretty well set up as you can see.

On the way up she watched a dog training video twice (she said she didn't remember everything the first time and needed to watch it again). She has since informed me of things I am doing wrong- such as you are never supposed to yell at your dogs- I don't do it very often but there are moments!

You can tell she was very happy to say hello to the new neighbor. She is just as happy to see him when he comes over to our house during the day (Puppy Daycare Supervisor- another title I have gained).
He has gotten a little bigger now but he will stay a small dog. He is a mini Australian Shepherd. He wants to be friends with Kali but while he is still in the biting phase Kali loses patience with him. I will have to get some other photos of him up soon.

Lists of memories
Well, as I went looking for old cards and letters yesterday I found some other fun things. Specifically 3 sets of lists- that were several pages in length.
How many of you have done lists of memories? I can't remember doing it since I got married. The three lists I found were:
1. Must have been senior year of high school- Kirstin and I wrote down several pages of our inside jokes- (Kirstin if you are reading this call me when you have time for a loonng conversation, you know how we are ;) )
2. Freshman year at BYU- Annette and I wrote down 5 pages of brief memories or inside jokes. (I called her the other day and we LAUGHED although we couldn't remember all of the stories and couldn't get through all of the pages before the duties of parenthood called.)
3. Trip to Washington DC- Pages and pages and pages of one liners that we wrote at the airport while we were waiting for our flights home. I have the original list- did anyone else get a copy? Memories- Foggy Bottom, Eskimopies!, the joy of fitting 6 people in a 5 person car... (Jenni I know you are reading this- want copies? They are in your handwriting- Call me! ;) )
The lists are so fun to read over although a little embarrassing too! Did I really do that! Did I really say that! Oh, I remember that date...YIKES!
Does anyone else have such lists of memories? Do you think that anyone still does this?

The Art of Letter Writing...
Isn't it a little sad that letter writing has become a rarity? So long to the handwritten words of friends and family. Now we usually just get a few words and a signature to a card.
Of course there are very good reasons for this-
1. We can actually read what it written now because most correspondence is typed.
2. We often use email which is so quick and can be written quickly and then immediately delivered.
3. Handwriting while taught in schools quickly is forgotten because of the requirements for reports and things to be typed on a computer.
4. Thoughts typed on a computer can be spell checked for us, and we can edit our thoughts before we send them out. A very nice thing for those of us (like myself) that have trouble forming clear thoughts on a page.
The computers are wonderful things and I am the first one to send a quick email and spell check my work. However I was reading about writing family history books and the scene described was of a person looking in her grandmother's attic in a chest and finding piles of old letters. The excitement that reading those letters gave provided a clearer picture of who her ancestors were. These days letters are rarely kept and emails are kept even less. Even if I kept all of my emails would they be of interest to anyone?
Occasionally I write to someone about what I have been doing but usually my emails are short and brief. Sometimes it occurs to me that I should print out those emails and put them in my seldom used journal- but that never seems to happen.
I know that I have some letters - mostly that I received while at school (especially during my freshman year) that I have kept and enjoy re-reading. How life changes when you are not looking. I wonder where they are...perhaps I will take some time to look for them today.

My Brother is in a Commercial!
I just got an email from my brother John- he is going to be in a commercial for his school. Actually I guess he IS in it already. You can see it on YouTube. In the 30 sec commercial he is the one getting his neck adjusted (see :09).
Kind of fun and since I don't know anyone who lives where this commercial would be aired I thought I should spread the word!

Screen Cleaner
If you're like me, you occasionally have to deal with the annoyance of fingerprints, handprints and occasionally even full-on peanut butter smudges covering your computer screen and making it difficult to see anything. There's now a way to take care of those right over the internet. This amazing new screen cleaner will quickly and easily remove the offending smudges.

We Love it Here
As the mercury has been dipping here over the last week it reminds me of how we spent last year's cold spell- outdoors at the St. Paul Winter Carnival, which of course is beginning this week. Here is the picture that I was tempted to send as our Christmas card but I was afraid it would scare visitors from coming to visit us. We rarely need to dress this warmly here.

Spencer and Nate got on the news that night -and were asked why they were out on such a cold day and Spencer was the model for how to dress if you did brave the weather. For much of the time we were there only his eyes were visible.
What is funny about his picture is that it reminds me of the ad campaign that the Mpls Star Tribune has done for years here is one of the drawings.

Ice Fishing with Uncle Mike
So, with Uncle Mike in town from Texas, we decided we couldn't let him leave without doing something truly Minnesotan. So what did we do? Why we drove him out on a frozen lake, of course.
We took him out on Lake Minnetonka to fish for crappies and blue gills. Outside temp was 18 degrees when we got there, and 10 when we left. With the wind chill it felt like it was pretty close to zero. (Which, by the way, is supposed to be the actual high temperature on Sunday. Mike is so glad he's leaving before then.)
We decided to be nice and not make Mike fish outside sitting on a bucket--which is the truly old-school way to do it. Instead he got to fish from the comfort of a heated fish house.
Mike shared a fish house with Mark Stanley and me.
(My spot was on an overturned bucket just inside the door.)

On the way home, we stopped for a picture in this quaint little village--that happens to be a 100 yards off shore. There are about 30 fish houses back there.

Jenna's Bad Day
Jenna had a bit of a rough day on Monday.
1. She ran into a wall in the gym at the YMCA (she "forgot to put on my brakes" while racing)
2. She got hit by a boy in her class
3. She got a finger pinched in a drawer.
Here is a shot of her bruised chin (from the wall) - and yes it is a little tender.

But later that day she was able to see her Uncle Mike who is in town for business and that improved her day. We went out to dinner and then we had fun playing the Wii with him. I think they are going to go ice fishing tonight- I will be sure to send a camera for that activity!

Yeah, it's been a while...
Yes, I have been a slacker... I am having trouble with my internet connection and it has taken me over all morning to load these pictures and post the message so the other updates are going to have to wait until later, but here are a few highlights
A few Christmas pics...
A photo of the Scuzins on the Christianson side.
(They are second cousins hence scuzins although I have never spelled it out before!)
They are modeling the pjs that their Granty (Great Aunt) Mary got them.
Notice the low number of boys, poor Spencer.

Kali with a new toy that only lasted a couple of weeks.
I didn't take a lot of pictures- I was having fun enjoying having family around-
plus I still haven't mastered our camera yet and several shots didn't turn out well.
(I think I need to break down and read the instruction manual)

I think she liked them...
So I went Christmas shopping for our dog Kali today and got some treats and small toys for her. I left the bag downstairs and left to go out with my sister soon afterwards. Kali doesn't go downstairs unless someone else is there so I told Nate about the bag (he and the kids weren't home at the time either) and didn't think about it, until I got home.
The plastic bag it was in with the rest of the toys was found in a similar shredded fashion on my bed. So while Kali has shown to be picky about her treats in the past apparently this one is a hit. There were no treats left anywhere and I am glad that I only got a small bag.
So if any of you dog owners are looking for treats that also keep your dogs teeth clean look for this brand- the Filet Mignon Flavor is a hit!
When I got home I walked into my room and found this....

That is what is left of the treat bag that I got Kali.

'Twas The Night Before Christmas- Mom Style
I was sent this by email and thought I would share it this way. It has a good message for us mom's who tend to get stressed out- which probably covers all moms at one time or another.
Sometimes we need reminding of what life is all about. Especially at times during the Holiday season, when all we seem to do is clean and bake and shop etc.... So stop for a moment and hug that little one so special, whether he/she is 2 months or 22 years, or even older than that.
For they are the Gift that God gave us in life...and what a gift to be treasured, far above any other!
Twas the night before Christmas,
when all thru the abode
Only one creature was stirring,
and she was cleaning the commode.
The children were finally sleeping,
all snug in their beds,
while visions of N-64 & Barbie,
flipped through their heads.
The dad was snoring in front of the TV,
with a half-constructed bicycle propped on his knee.
So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter,
which made her sigh, "Now what is the matter?"
With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand,
She descended the stairs, & saw the old man.
He was covered with ashes & soot, which fell with a
shrug, "Oh great," muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug."
"Ho Ho Ho!" cried Santa, "I'm glad you're awake."
"Your gift was especially difficult to make."
"Thanks, Santa, but all I want is time alone."
"Exactly!" he chuckled, "So, I've made you a clone."
"A clone?" she muttered, "What good is that?"
"Run along, Santa, I've no time for chit chat."
Then out walked the clone - The mother's twin,
Same hair, same eyes, same double chin.
"She'll cook, she'll dust, she'll mop every mess.
You'll relax, take it easy, watch The Young & The Restless."
"Fantastic!" the mom cheered. "My dream has come true!"
"I'll shop, I'll read, I'll sleep a night through!"
From the room above, the youngest did fret.
"Mommy?! Come quickly, I'm scared & I'm wet."
The clone replied, "I'm coming, sweetheart."
"Hey," the mom smiled, "She sure knows her part."
The clone changed the small one & hummed her tune,
as she bundled the child in a blanket cocoon.
"You're the best mommy ever. I really love you."
The clone smiled & sighed, "And I love you, too."
The mom frowned & said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal."
That's my child's LOVE she is trying to steal."
Smiling wisely Santa said, "To me it is clear,
Only one loving mother is needed here."
The mom kissed her child & tucked her in bed.
"Thank You, Santa, for clearing my head.
I sometimes forget, it won't be very long,
when they'll be too old for my cradle & song."
The clock on the mantle began to chime.
Santa whispered to the clone, "It works every time."
With the clone by his side Santa said "Goodnight.
Merry Christmas, dear Mom, You will be all right."

The Pageant Review
Well, Spencer wants to be an actor. He loved the show and they talked about how they teach acting classes and he wanted to know all about it. If he wants to take classes we can find a place a little closer to home.
Jenna who still wasn't feeling well watched from Nate's lap and found some parts funny but didn't like when the Herdman's started fighting or being aggressive. But as we were leaving she did join in with Spencer to say what parts she did like.
Nate and I thought it was very well done and enjoyable. I brought my camera and asked the kids if they wanted to have their picture taken with any of the cast but they didn't so no photos.
I wondering if we should change our the angel's part in our Christmas pageant "Hey you! A child is born! He's over there! Get moving!" Gladys Herdman who played the angel was the most entertaining of the bunch.
And a bonus for the night- Nate was able to come home first (they told everyone to go home early). So Nate got home and moments later we all got into one car and left again.

Christmas Favorites
Okay Lisa, I have been meaning to do this for a while. Sorry it took me so long to answer to your tag. Here are some of my Christmas favorites or at least the ones that I remember right now.
Favorite Christmas song: I like Angels We Have Heard on High at Christmas but I like lots of them. I always tended to sing or hum Silent Night as a lullaby when putting kids to sleep.
What does your Christmas tree look like: it is a little sad this year. I like the tree- it bigger than our last one but the ornaments are scarce but we did make most of them that are on there. Perhaps I will take a picture later.
When do you start shopping for presents, on black Friday or the day before Christmas? I start shopping as soon as possible. I try to be done by Thanksgiving or the day after and I pretty much was this year but that doesn't always happen.
Favorite Christmas tradition: We now do the Christmas pageant and we have fun with that. It was a lot of fun last year because we were able to include several more actors. The best was Lindsay playing the star- I may need to upload the photo. Growing up we also used to have a night that we had unusual fruit- like star fruit. It was fun to try new things. I can't think of any others at the moment.
Best holiday memory: I remember that there is a church we always pass on the way to my grandma's house. It is in a small town and for Christmas they used to have candles lit all around the church. No need to worry about fire because the candles were set in ice holders that they would make in gallon ice cream buckets I think. It looked really cool. They don't do that anymore - perhaps because it hasn't been cold enough in December for the ice to stay solid. I also like just having fun chatting and playing games with family members.
Fake or real tree: This year it is fake. We tend to get a real one occasionally and then go back to the fake one for a few years.
Favorite Christmas movie: I do agree with Lisa and I like The Santa Clause, and who can deny a Charlie Brown special but the movie Elf has grown on me. I also love White Christmas.
What do you want for Christmas this year? (Imagine Bing Crosby) "I'm wishing for a white Christmas" That one may come true if the snow doesn't melt this weekend. And it would be great if we got a small dusting to make it look all nice and white again.
Can I also wish for a clean house? Ahh, I guess I need to put some elbow grease into that one if I want it to come true. Actually after having Jenna sick for a full week (she is still eating next to nothing and is coughing) I would really love for everyone to be healthy.
Favorite Christmas story: Luke 2, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
