Fantasy Football

So, it's late July and you know what that means. The first training camps opened this past weekend, and men across the country started assembling their fantasy football leagues. For years the Ashford clan has done a casual league open to all comers, but in the last few years there has been a push to do something more for those who are a bit more serious about their football.

Most of the brothers did a separate league last year in addition to the regular casual one. I wimped out, making some pitiful excuse about working 50- to 60-hour weeks. This year I have decided to man up and join the big leagues.

The hardcore Ashford league for 2008 will be formed tomorrow after an intense series of negotiations. I count 20 emails in the thread over the last couple of days, but I think we have reached an agreement in principle. Terms of the deal have not been released as there are still a few minor details to work out, but it is rumored to be a 1-year deal for a keeper league with a players option for a second year. Included in the Terms and Conditions of the league is a blood oath to be present for the live draft, participate fully every week and compete to the bitter end. Something along these lines:

By the way, Kim has been invited to participate, but has so far been a bit squeamish about both the finger-pricking and the long-term effects of exposure to such high levels of testosterone.

Ah, yes. Fantasy Football - Good, clean, competitive, blood-letting fun. And somehow, despite my best efforts, I manage to draft total pansies and end up a freaking loser every year.
